BOISE, ID- The Golden Flashes came up short in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, falling 52-38 to the Wyoming Cowboys on Tuesday afternoon.
Dustin Crum wrapped up his stellar Kent State career with another phenomenal effort. Crum tossed four touchdown passes and ran for another in the loss. He ends his Kent State career with 55 touchdown passes, second most in program history. With his 265 yards through the air, he became the first Golden Flash to top 3,000 yards in a season. In fitting fashion, his final pass in a Kent State contest was a 73-yard strike to Devontez Walker in the fourth quarter
Wyoming struck first on Tuesday afternoon. After the Flashes turned the ball over on downs to start the game, the Cowboys found the end zone on a five-yard run by quarterback Levi Williams. It would be the first of five touchdowns that Williams accounted for on the day.
After the Cowboys' first score, the Flashes answered back with 17 straight of their own. Crum hit Dante Cephas on an 80-yard pass and called his own number on a 12-yard draw play. The defense continued to slow Wyoming, thanks to a pair of sacks from Saivon Taylor-Davis. Kent State had an opportunity to go up 20-7 but Andrew Glass' 40-yard field goal sailed wide right. That sparked the Cowboys who scored touchdowns on back-to-back possessions to retake the lead, 21-17. However, Wyoming left too much time on the clock for the FlashFAST offense. Kent State needed just 90 seconds to score the go-ahead touchdown, a three-yard catch for Ja'Shaun Poke. Kent State took a 24-21 lead into the locker room.
The Cowboys would dominate the third quarter, churning out a pair of touchdown drives and holding the Flashes off the scoreboard. Bryan Bradford jump started the offense toward the end of the quarter with a pair of big runs, but Kent State would be held off the scoreboard after Glass' field goal hit off the inside of the upright and bounced away. Bradford would end his day with 109 yards rushing on just eight carries.
The Flashes and Cowboys would trade touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Kent State got touchdown catches from Hayden Junker and Walker but couldn't recover the ensuing on-side kick to keep the momentum, and the ball on their side.
Marquez Cooper had 125 yards rushing, leading a rushing attack that had 319 yards on Tuesday. Dante Cephas (116 yards) and Nykeim Johnson (101) led a receiving corps that saw eight different players catch at least one pass. Dean Clark led the defense with 13 stops, while Taylor-Davis and Adin Huntington recorded sacks for the Golden Flashes.
Kent State ends the season at 7-7 while Wyoming checks out at 7-6 on the year. The 7-7 mark gives the Golden Flashes its first three-year run with at least a .500 record since 1972-74.
