KENT, OHIO- The Flashes struck for three in the sixth and four more in the seventh and Colin Romel picked up his first win in a 10-7 comeback over Seton Hall at Schoonover Stadium.
Romel pitched three and two-thirds innings of relief to get the win, allowing two runs, one earned and striking out a batter. Jack Zimmerman pitched around a two-out walk for his second save.
Seton Hall got to Kent State starter Ryan Lane early, scoring four in the first, three coming in on a Thomas Holdorff homer. Holdorff took a pitch up into the wind blowing out to right and over the 355 sign to make it 4-0 Seton Hall . The wind again played a factor in the bottom of the inning as Collin Mathews hit a fly ball into center that turned around two Pirate outfielders for a run-scoring double.
Flashes made it 4-3 in the third after Ben Carew hit a line shot over the left-field wall for a two-run homer, his first of the year to make it 4-3. Seton Hall padded back the lead with single tallies in the fifth, chasing Ryan Lane and another in the sixth. Kent State got to lefty starter Tyler Burnham in the fifth. Mathews continued his big bat with a towering homer to left center, his third of the year. After a single by Justin Miknis, Burnham exited and the Flashes went to work on the bullpen.
Brennan O'Neil struck out Justin Kirby, but Mack Timbrook took him deep over the right field wall to tie the game at six. In the seventh, the Flashes took advantage of an error, a walk and a hit batter. That loaded the bases for Miknis who hit a sinking liner to left. Will Gale left his feet for it, came up empty and it cleared the bases for a three-run, go-ahead triple. Kirby drove Miknis home and the Flashes broke open a four-run lead, 10-6.
Romel and Zimmerman made the lead hold up. In the eighth, Romel worked around back-to-back hits that started the inning and ended the frame by stopping a sure fire line-shot single with his leg, collecting himself and making the out at first. Zimmerman worked the relatively quiet ninth for the save and the Flashes got the win in the series opener.
The win move Kent State to 5-4 on the year while Seton Hall drops to 2-6. The two teams will do it again tomorrow with a 1 p.m. first pitch from Schoonover Stadium.
