KINGSTON, TN- Kent State sits in seventh place, at one under and MAC Player of the Year Cade Breitenstine sits in a tie for 14th after day two at the NCAA Regional.
The early morning rounds proved very tough for the Golden Flashes and the teams atop the leaderboard after round one as NC State and Houston dropped down the leaderboard. Kent State sits just one shot in back of Clemson and Charlotte who are in a tie for fifth and three in back of round one co-leader NC State in a tightly contested field.
Breitenstine led the way on Tuesday, shooting a one-under 71 in round two and he sits at one under overall in the tournament. He is tied for 14th overall and just four shots in back of the leaders. Breitenstine parred his first 10 holes before an eagle three on the par-5 11th.
Josh Gilkison and Chris Vandette are two shots behind Breitenstine and are tied for 28th overall at one-over par for the tournament. Gilkison birdied two of his final four holes to close strong and finish his round at an even-par 71. The Springboro, Ohio native finished with five birdies in round two. Vandette also closed strong with birdies on 17 and 18 to close his round at a four-over 75. Will Kurtz and Jared Wilson are in 35th and 43rd respectfully after rounds of 77 and 74 on Tuesday.
Kent State still sits atop the tournament leader board in par-4 scoring (an even par 4.00 average) and also paces the field with 40 birdies as a team. Kurtz has been especially brilliant on the par-4s, playing them at six-under, tops in the field.
The Golden Flashes are in the second flight of teams to tee off in Wednesday's final round. Kent State will be joined by Virginia and Houston with tee times taking place between 8:25 and 9:10 tomorrow morning.
