Soccer Ready for Heavyweight Matchup with Ball State

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State soccer will square off with Ball State in a battle between two of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference on Thursday, Oct. 20, at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium. First touch is set for 7 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes (4-6-5, 4-1-3Â MAC) extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-1 draw with Northern Illinois on Sunday.
Freshman Taylor English netted the lone goal for the Flashes on the afternoon. English intercepted an attempted clearance inside the 18-yard box in the 35th minute, pushed the ball to her left, and lobbed it over the keeper and across the goal line. The strike was the first score and first points of the freshman's collegiate career.
Goalkeeper Sarah Melén tallied five saved against the Huskies.
Postseason Push
The Flashes currently sit in third place in the MAC standings entering Thursday's contest and can control their own destiny from here out. Buffalo sits atop the table with a 5-0-3 mark in conference play, followed by Ball State at 5-1-2. After the Flashes host the Cardinals on Thursday, they will face their last regular season road test at Central Michigan before squaring off with Buffalo in the regular season finale at Dix Stadium on Oct. 27.Â
Oh Captain, My Captain
With last Thursday's win over Bowling Green, head coach Rob Marinaro recorded his 200th win at the helm of Kent State soccer. Marinaro has been with the Kent State soccer program since its inception in 1997 and has served as head coach for 22 seasons.
Scouting the Cardinals
Ball State (6-4-5, 5-1-2 MAC) has won five of their last seven games entering Thursday, including a 2-1 victory against Ohio on Sunday. Avery Fenchel leads the Cardinals with 11 goals while Abby Elgert has tallied a team-high six assists. Bethany Moser has started all 15 games in goal and has 55 saves, three shutouts, and a 1.29 goals against average.
Series History
The Flashes and Huskies will square off for the 36th time on Thursday. Kent State holds a slight edge in the all-time series, 17-16-2, and has won two of the last three matchups. Last season, Lauryn Arruda scored and Giulia Giovinazzi tallied two assists as the Flashes won 3-0 at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
