OXFORD, OH- The Kent State Golden Flashes' comeback came up three points shy on Saturday afternoon in a 27-24 setback to the Miami RedHawks at Yager Stadium.
The Red Hawks (3-3, 1-1) jumped out to a 17-0 first-quarter start using a pair of big plays on offense and a blocked field goal on special teams to get out to the early lead.
Kent State (2-4, 1-1) responded midway through the second quarter when Devontez Walker got free and was left all alone for a 27-yard touchdown pass to make it 17-7. Walker had a career day with 11 catches for 159 yards and two scores. It would be 17-7 heading into the half.
Miami extended the lead back to 17, scoring on their first drive of the third quarter. The Flashes responded with an 83-yard scoring drive of their own, capped by a Walker 23 yard touchdown catch. Collin Schlee had the big play on the drive, scrambling for 21 yards on a third-and-20, setting up the touchdown pass two plays later. The signal caller ended the day with 306 yards passing and three scores while adding 27 yards on the ground.
The Flashes would get to within a score (27-21) on a Dante Cephas touchdown catch in the back of the endzone. Cephas enjoyed another 100-yard day as well, catching nine balls for 109 yards and that touchdown. He passed the 2000 yard receiving mark for his career in the game, the fourth Golden Flash ever to do so. Kent State would get into the red zone on their next possession, ending with a field goal from Andrew Glass from 38-yards out. Miami salted the final six minutes away, converting a pair of third downs and a fourth down with a little over a minute remaining.
The RedHawks rush defense held the Flashes to 133 yards on 35 carries. Bryan Bradford led the attack with 47 on the ground on nine carries. Marquez Cooper added 32 of his own and also crossed the 2,000 yard mark for his career.
Kent State remains on the road next weekend, traveling to the Glass City to take on the west division leading Toledo Rockets. Kick-off is set for 3:30 p.m. on ESPN +.
