FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Kent State dropped its first road game of the season, 80-59, Thursday night at Arkansas.
Senior Katie Shumate led the way with 12 points and joined the 1,000-point club on a three-pointer during the third period.
The Golden Flashes (1-2) received a boost from their bench, which outscored the Razorbacks' reserves 26-15. Freshman Corynne Hauser scored 10 points and had a team-high three assists. Graduate student Annie Pavlansky added nine points and two assists.
Kent State won the opening tip and scored the game's first points on a layup by Shumate. The defense came up with three steals over the next three minutes, while graduate student Hannah Young and junior Casey Santoro added layups for a 6-3 lead. Arkansas answered with a 14-4 run to take the lead.
A three-point field goal by Young got the Flashes within 19-17 with 1:24 left in the first period but Arkansas scored the next 14 points and took a 46-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After missing four shots to start the third quarter, Kent State made three in a row to get within 14. Four three-point fields over a stretch of three minutes late in the third and early in the fourth extended the host's advantage to 27 points.
The Flashes continue their road trip Sunday at Oklahoma State. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
