STILLWATER, Okla. - Corynne Hauser hit a go-ahead lay-up with 4.7 seconds to play helping Kent State to a 59-56 win over Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon inside the historic Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Golden Flashes (2-2) went on a 6-0 run in the final 30 seconds and outscored the Cowgirls 19-12 in the fourth quarter to help secure the victory. Katie Shumate scored four of the final six, had nine in the final frame and finished with a game-high 23 points. It is the first true road win for Kent State over a Power-5 opponent since a 2004 victory at Syracuse.
Lindsey Thall joined Shumate in double-figures with 10. She went on a personal 8-0 run in the fourth to erase Oklahoma State's seven-point lead, its largest of the game. Thall's lone made three of the game capped the run and gave Kent State a 48-47 lead with 7:35 to go. It would be a one-possession game the rest of the way.
Kent State used stifling defense all game long, holding the Cowgirls to a mere 31.1% from the field and 21.7% from three-point range. Through four games, Oklahoma State was averaging 90 points per game heading into the matchup.
The Flashes also made the Cowgirls pay for mistakes, turning 10 turnovers into 13 points. There was no bigger turnover than the 10th, when the Flashes stole the in-bounds pass on the potential go-ahead possession after Hauser's bucket. They also won the rebounding battle, 43-41, led by Shumate's eight and Bridget Dunn, Thall and Hannah Young all adding six.
Depth also proved to be a big factor in the victory. Nine different Golden Flashes scored in the game and the Kent State bench outscored the Cowgirls' 17-9.
The Flashes will stay on the road next weekend, heading to the Christmas City Classic hosted by Lehigh. The Flashes will match-up with Quinnipiac in a neutral site game on Saturday to start the tournament. Tip time is set for 2:30 p.m.
