KENT, Ohio — The final Kent State home indoor track and field meet each season has been renamed the Jud Logan Memorial Tune Up in perpetuity, Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Bill Lawson announced on Tuesday.
A member of the 1990 induction class to the Varsity "K" Hall of Fame who was in his 17th season as the head coach at Ashland University prior to his passing on Jan. 3, Logan's voice could be heard loud and clear at this meet, which was previously named the Kent State Tune Up, each year as he coached up his own student-athletes and offered encouragement to throwers from other schools who were aiming for a big mark to qualify for the national meet.
"Jud Logan's passion for track and field, and life itself, was unequaled," Lawson said. "The energy and motivation Jud brought to others was truly one of his greatest gifts. It is an honor to rename the Kent State Tune Up to the Jud Logan Memorial Tune Up, ensuring his legacy will remain present at this meet each year."
In addition to being a four-year letter winner (1978-81) as a member of the Golden Flashes' track and field program, Logan earned a letter for the 1978 football season. He qualified for the NCAA Championships in 1980 and won three individual Mid-American Conference titles in throwing events. Logan went on to represent the United States in the hammer throw at four Olympic Games.
Additionally, the Jud Logan-Al Schoterman LIGHT GIVER Scholarship endowment has been established and will be awarded to student-athlete who competes in throwing events.
"I never had the pleasure to meet Jud, personally, but I have heard countless stories about his impact on others, the love he had for track and field, and the care he exhibited for young people," Director of Athletics Randale L. Richmond said.
