Kent State redshirt senior Jake Wickey will compete in the men's weight throw at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the City of Birmingham. The competition is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, March 11 and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Wickey placed eighth at the NCAA Championships a year ago and enters with a No. 4 national ranking after breaking the Golden Flashes' record with a monster throw of 75'-11.5" at the Jud Logan Memorial Tune Up on Feb. 19. The Medina native is undefeated this season and was named Mid-American Conference Most Outstanding Field Performer after capturing his record fourth weight throw title two weeks ago.
KENT STATE IN MEN'S WEIGHT THROW AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Golden Flashes have a long history of great men's weight throw performances at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, including three national championships and seven top-3 finishes. Al Schoterman won Kent State's first national title in 1971, and teammate Jacques Accambray finished second. The two earned the top-2 spots again in 1972, but Accambray came away as the winner this time. Accambray added a second-place finish in 1973 and concluded his indoor career with his second national championship in 1974.
Joe Kuzma was the first Flash to qualify in the event and placed fifth in 1966. Fred Breidenbach posted fifth-place finishes in 1976 and 1978. Angus Cooper took third in 1988. Most recently, Matthias Tayala placed fifth in 2015.
