BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Redshirt senior Jake Wickey finished second in the men's weight throw at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday evening.
Wickey's throw of 75'-8.75" on his fifth attempt of the competition secured a runner-up finish, which is the best by a Kent State thrower in the event since Jacques Accambray won his second national title in 1974.
"We are extremely proud of Jake and all of his accomplishments", said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Bill Lawson. "Representing Kent State University on the biggest stage of his athletic career is priceless. Nathan Fanger once again proves himself as one of the best coaches in the NCAA. It is simply a great moment for Jake and Kent State University. Congratulations Jake and Coach Fanger!"
His opening heave of 71'-0.50" placed him in sixth place at the end of the first round, but he fell to ninth after two rounds of throws. Facing the possibility of falling out of the top nine spots that advance to the finals, Wickey vaulted into third with a throw of 73'-4.75" on his third attempt. He remained in third at the end of the fourth round before recording his best throw of the evening on his fifth attempt.
The second-place finish earned eight points for the Golden Flashes in the team standings, which puts them in a tie for eighth at the conclusion of the first day of action. Princeton sits atop the leaderboard with 20 points.
Kent State is scheduled to begin the outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays from Thursday, March 24 through Saturday, March 26.
