DeKALB, IL- Connor Ashby drove in four and Collin Romel tossed five strong innings to lead a balanced effort in a 13-3 run-rule victory over Northern Illinois on Sunday.

Kent State took control early in this one, scoring three times without the benefit of a hit in the second. The Flashes took advantage of a walk and a pair of NIU errors to grab the lead.

A fourth unearned run scored in the third in similar fashion, then Ashby made the Huskies pay with a towering homer to left to make it 6-0.

That was more than enough for Romel, the lefty allowed just one run on four hits in his five innings of work. He sidestepped three walks while also striking out three and earned his second win of the season.

Ashby and the Flashes added on in the final three innings. The freshman added run-scoring singles in the fifth and the sixth and finished the day 3-3 with four driven in. Ashby led a balanced offensive attack with the 5-9 hitters combining for nine hits and nine rbi. Kent State was also aggressive on the bases, stealing six bags on Sunday. One of those was by Kyle Jackson who ran his on-base streak to 21 games dating back to last season.

The Golden Flashes will go for the series win tomorrow. First pitch for the now wrap-around weekend series is set for 1 p.m. eastern.
