KENT, Ohio — It took a little over two minutes for senior Lindsey Thall to make her first three-point field goal of the day and move into sole possession as the program's all-time leader and Kent State closed its home schedule with a 59-50 wire-to-wire victory over Ohio Saturday afternoon inside of the M.A.C. Center. It was the 100th victory at Kent State for sixth-year head coach Todd Starkey.
Thall tied the record, previously held by Larissa Lurken, with four three-pointers on Wednesday. With 7:59 to play in the first quarter, the Strongsville native received a pass a few feet beyond the top of the arc and knocked down the record-setting shot to put the Golden Flashes ahead 6-0. Thall added two more triples and sits at 215 makes for her career.
On a day that shots weren't falling at the normal rate, Kent State (18-11, 10-10 MAC) locked in on the defensive end and held the nation's 24th highest-scoring team 25 points below its season average and 10 under its previous low on the season. The Bobcats shot 18-of-67 from the field for a season-worst 26.9%. Active NCAA Division I leading scorer Cece Hooks scored just eight points on 4-of-21 shooting and failed to reach double-digits for the first time since Jan. 4, 2020.
The Flashes totaled a season-high 51 rebounds with six players grabbing at least five. Thall and senior Hannah Young led the way with eight each and freshman Bridget Dunn added seven. Junior Nila Blackford had five rebounds, moving into 10th on Kent State's career rebounding list with 690 through three seasons.
Junior Katie Shumate led the Flashes with 12 points and sophomore Casey Santoro was right behind with 11. Dunn and Thall tallied nine points each.
Kent State will learn if there are more games to be played on Sunday, March 13 when the 64-team field for 2022 Postseason WNIT field is announced.
