KENT, OHIO- A Friday night pitcher's duel went the way of the visiting Miami RedHawks on Friday night, taking Friday night's game 4-0.
The series opener featured Eric Chalus for the Golden Flashes and the MAC's ERA and wins leader in Jonathan Brand for Miami. Chalus pitched well in his first Friday start, going 5.2 innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out six. Brand tossed seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing five hits and two walks against seven strikeouts.
Miami struck for the game's first run in the second on a solo homer to the opposite field for Zach MacDonald. Kent State loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on a pair of singles and a walk but could not score. The Flashes had runners in scoring position again in the fourth but could not push across the equalizer.
A two-out run-scoring single in the sixth brought home Miami's second run of the game and would be the last batter Chalus faced. Collin Romel was excellent out of the pen for the second-straight Friday. The senior went the final 3.1 innings, allowing four hits and two unearned runs while striking out five.
The loss drops Kent State to 13-19 on the season and 8-11 in MAC play. Miami improves to 16-21 on the season and 11-13 in conference play. The teams will meet for two on Saturday starting with a seven-inning double header. It is Military appreciation day with the pre-game festivities starting around 12:45 p.m. before the 1 p.m. first pitch.
