KENT, OHIO-The Golden Flashes welcome the Miami RedHawks for a key four-game series this weekend at Schoonover Stadium.
Â
The weekend weather is forecasted to be beautiful all three days of the series. Friday's first pitch is at 6 p.m. with reusable tote bags given out to the first 200 fans as part of our Earth Day celebration. Saturday's double header gets started at one and will be military appreciation day, anyone with a military ID will get free admission. Sunday's finale also starts at one and it is family day with a four-for-$20 ticket offer available for any walk-up sales. Concessions will be available all weekend long and beer sales will be available on Friday (through the sixth inning) and on Saturday (through the fourth inning of game two).
It is a key weekend for both Kent State and Miami. The Golden Flashes at 8-10 in the MAC are a game out of fourth heading into the weekend and two back in the win column, Miami is 10-13 in the MAC and a game and a half back of fourth, but three out in the loss column.
The Flashes got strong starts from a pair of freshman lefties last weekend in Eric Chalus and Payton Cariaco. Chalus struck out 10 Rockets in his start and became the first pitcher since Joey Murray in 2019 to fan 10+ batters in consecutive games. Cariaco got the start on Sunday and pitched into the sixth, allowing two earned runs and striking out four. Offensively, the balance continues throughout the lineup as all nine "regulars" have double digit runs and rbi this season. Jacob Casey also swung a hot bat last weekend, hitting his first two collegiate homers and collecting five hits.
The RedHawks sit eighth in batting during MAC play with a .274 team average but average over 6.5 runs per MAC game. Cole Andrews has led the offense in most major categories and has 23 extra base hits this season, including seven homers. They sit third in MAC pitching with a 4.96 team ERA. They are led by two front-line starters in Jonathan Brand and Zach Maxey. Brand has been stellar all season, posting a 6-1 record and a sizzling 1.33 ERA. Maxey owns a 3.29 ERA and has a tough luck 1-2 overall record.
All four games of the series will be streamed free of charge with Dan Griffin and Tyler Henry on the call. Live stats will also be provided for the weekend, all links are available on the baseball schedule page. The Flashes will stay in the area next weekend, making the short trip down I-76 to take on the Zips in a Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge four-game series.
