KENT, Ohio — Head coach Todd Starkey announced a rigorous schedule for the upcoming 2022-23 season for the Kent State women's basketball team.
The Golden Flashes' 29-game regular season schedule includes 15 contests at the M.A.C. Center and three matchups with Power-5 programs. Kent State went 2-0 against these teams last season, taking down 19th-ranked UCLA and Penn State in the Gulf Coast Showcase.
"I am very excited about the non-conference schedule that we were able to put together," Starkey stated. "Highlighted by three games against opponents from Power-5 conferences, we will be challenged throughout the first two months as we prepare for another hyper-competitive season of Mid-American Conference women's basketball."
Kent State is scheduled for an exhibition matchup against Mercyhurst on Nov. 3.
The Flashes will host Florida State for regular season opener on Nov. 10. This is the second time in the past three years with fans in attendance in which a Power-5 program will visit the M.A.C. Center for the home opener. Graduate student Lindsey Thall made a program record eight three-point field goals in the 2019-20 home opener against Ohio State.
"Bringing high-profile opponents to the M.A.C. Center is always a priority," Starkey said. "We have a terrific fan base, and want to provide them with intriguing matchups each season. Scheduling home games against schools that play in the NCAA Tournament annually is an important step as we continue to try and elevate the national profile of Kent State women's basketball."
A home game against Northern Kentucky on Nov. 13 will follow before ending the first month of the season with four road games. The Flashes will play at Arkansas on Nov. 17 and at Oklahoma State on Nov. 20. Next will be a two-game tournament hosted by Lehigh on Nov. 26 and Nov. 27.
Four of five games during December will be played at the M.A.C. Center, beginning against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 4. The Flashes will make the trip to Duquesne on Dec. 7 and then conclude the non-conference slate at home against Hiram (Dec. 11), Otterbein (Dec. 19) and Coppin State (Dec. 31).
The 18-game MAC schedule starts Jan. 4 against Buffalo and finishes March 4 against Northern Illinois with both games to be played at the M.A.C. Center. In addition to the Bulls and Huskies, Kent State is also scheduled to play against Akron, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Toledo twice each. The Flashes will play just one time against Ball State, Central Michigan, Miami and Western Michigan.
The top eight teams in the conference standings will compete in the 2023 MAC Women's Basketball Tournament at Cleveland's Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse from March 8-11.
