Hoogeboom Claims Medalist Honors at Dick McGuire Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Senior Mayka Hoogeboom earned her first collegiate victory to lead the Kent State women's golf team to a tie for third at the season-opening Dick McGuire Invitational.
The Golden Flashes shot a 54- hole total of 866 to tie host New Mexico and finish just three strokes out of second place.
"We will take many positives from the first event and definitely have some things to improve," head coach Casey VanDamme said.
Hoogeboom recorded an 8-under 208 for the tournament after carding a 73 on Tuesday. She also led the field of 93 competitors in birdies (17) and par-4 scoring (3.83).
"We are very excited for Mayka," added VanDamme. "She had a great summer and has continued her strong play. Even more impressive is how she recovered from poor starts on two of three rounds. She had the confidence to withstand the slow start and trusted herself."
Sophomore Jennifer Gu and senior Noramol Nuchsila both carded a 1-under 71 to lead Kent State over the final 18 holes. Gu finished in a tie for 17th overall (+2, 218) while Nuchsila moved up 27 spots on the leaderboard and tied for 35th (+6, 222).
Freshmen Blanca Yague-Cuadros (+10, 226) and Leon Takagi (+11, 227) finished tied for 56th and tied for 60th, respectively, in the first collegiate tournament.
Kent State will return to action next week at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tennessee.
