KENT- The Golden Flashes set a new program record with their 10th consecutive home win with a 63-10 victory over the Long Island Sharks in the 2022 home opener.
The Flashes scored early and often, rolling up 35 points in the opening 30 minutes. It is the third time in the Flashes' last four home games they scored 30 or more in the first half and fourth in their last six. Seven different Golden Flashes found the endzone with Gavin Garcia, Shakhi Carson, J.B. Awolowo and Trell Harris all scoring the first touchdown of their collegiate careers in the victory.
Collin Schlee opened the scoring, taking advantage of a free play and hitting Devontez Walker in stride for the second time this season. The 50-yard strike made it 7-0 early after the extra point. LIU responded with their lone touchdown of the game, a 60-yard pitch-and-catch out of the triple option.
From there on out, it was all Golden Flashes. Marquez Cooper answered with his first of two one-yard touchdown runs, he finished with 89 yards on 18 carries on Saturday. The Flashes put the game out of reach late in the first half. Gavin Garcia, fresh off his first rushing touchdown, blocked an LIU punt, J.B. Awolowo caught the deflection and rolled 34 yards for the score. It was the first blocked punt for a score since 2010 against Temple. Kent State led 35-10 at the half.
The defense shutout the Sharks in the second half, limiting Long Island to 100 yards of offense and six first downs. Nico Bolden led a balanced defense with nine tackles on the day. Khalib Johns kept up his strong start to the year with three more tackles for loss and his fourth sack of the season.
Offensively, the Flashes ran up 597 yards of offense including 353 on the ground off 48 carries. Five different backs had at least 40 yards. Collin Schlee completed 10 of his 12 passes for 199 yards and two scores. Devin Kargman made good use of his one pass, tossing a touchdown pass to fellow freshman Trell Harris.
The win is the 10th straight at home for the Flashes and broke a program record most recently set from 2011-13. Kent State is now one of 14 programs with a home win streak of 10 or more games. The Flashes wrap up the non-con next Saturday at Georgia, kick off is set for noon.
