Kent State Sweeps MAC East Player of the Week Awards

CLEVELAND โ Kent State volleyball student-athletes Erin Gardner, Alex Haffner and Savannah Matthews have earned Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The trio led the Golden Flashes to victories over Cleveland State (3-0) and Youngstown State (3-2) last week, extending the team's winning streak to six.
Gardner averaged 5.13 digs per set against and anchored a defense that held opposing attackers to a .199 hitting percentage and earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. She tallied 13 digs against the Vikings on Thursday and then led all players with 28 digs on the road Friday against the Penguins.
Haffner was named Setter of the Week for the second time this season, averaging 10.88 assists and 2.25 digs per set for the week. She logged a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs against Cleveland State and followed by tying her season-high with 54 assists at Youngstown State.
Matthews averaged 4.31 points and 4.00 kills per set and was selected as Offensive Player of the Week. She started the week by recording a season-best .360 hitting percentage and 12 kills against the Vikings. Matthews' versatility as a six-rotation player was on display at Youngstown State, as she posted 20 kills and 18 digs for her sixth double-double of the year.
Kent State gets the Mid-American Conference schedule started this weekend, hosting Bowling Green for a pair of matches at the M.A.C. Center. The Flashes and Falcons will battle at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 and at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24.
