KENT, Ohio — Visiting Toledo used a big third quarter to build a lead that was too large for Kent State to overcome in a 77-68 loss Saturday afternoon at the M.A.C. Center.
Freshman Corynne Hauser led the Golden Flashes (10-5, 2-2 MAC) in scoring for the second game in a row and finished with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Graduate student Lindsey Thall was plagued with foul trouble throughout the contest but was effective during her 12.5 minutes on the floor, totaling 12 points and helping Kent State outscore the Rockets by nine during that time. Sophomore Jenna Batsch provided quality minutes off the bench and added a season-high 10 points.
The first half met all expectations for the matchup between top-15 teams in the Mid-Major Poll, as the teams were tied 32-32 heading into the locker room after an opening 20 minutes that included 11 lead changes and four ties.
Toledo took control with a 9-0 run a few minutes into the third period and entered the fourth period with a 58-44 lead. The Rockets scored 26 points on 11-of-18 shooting in the quarter.
Hauser scored 10 of the Flashes' 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead a rally that saw their deficit cut to eight points with 44.2 seconds the play, but the defense was unable to force a fourth consecutive turnover and had to resort to sending the visitors to the free throw line.
All-MAC guard Quinesha Lockett led Toledo's second half surge and shot 8-of-10 from the floor for 23 of her game-high 36 points after halftime.
Kent State will be back home at the M.A.C. Center on Wednesday, Jan. 18 for the annual "We Back Pat" game against Eastern Michigan at 7 p.m.
