TOLEDO, Ohio – The Kent State volleyball team got back in the win column on Saturday by beating host Toledo, 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23) in a Mid-American Conference volleyball contest inside of Savage Arena.
Sophomores Mackenzie McGuire and Kendall White both posted double-doubles to lead the Golden Flashes (6-18, 2-11 MAC) to their first road victory in league play. McGuire posted 21 kills while hitting at a .315 clip and tallied 11 digs, while White totaled 29 assists and 14 digs while tying her career-high with five total blocks.
Freshman Logan Henderson and graduate student Kiana Mack added 11 kills and eight kills, respectively, while hitting at least .300.
Senior Bryn Roberts had a match-high 24 digs to lead the defense. Senior Karina Salinas added 10 digs and team-high three service aces.
How it Happened…
Set 1 (25-19): Mackenzie McGuire and Karina Salinas led Kent State back from a four-point deficit early in the set. McGuire had three kills and Salinas recorded consecutive aces as part of an eight-point run that put the Golden Flashes ahead 17-12. Toledo won four of the next five points to get within two before a service error ended the run. The teams split the next two points and Kent State then used a 6-2 run to close it out.
Set 2 (25-23): The Flashes trailed by as many as five points and never led until scoring six in a row, including back-to-back aces by Kiana Mack, that made it 23-21. Kent State's 24th point came on a service error. Toledo got within 24-23 with a kill but a low set led to a swing into the net on the ensuing point to make it 2-0 Flashes.
Set 3 (22-25): A four-point run gave Toledo a 6-5 lead, which it never gave up. Kent State tied it three times, but the hosts had an answer each time.
Set 4 (25-23): Neither team led by more than two points in a back-and-forth set that featured 17 ties and 10 lead changes. A kill by McGuire gave the Flashes a 24-22 lead and two chances for match point. Toledo posted a kill to extend it before sending the ensuing serve long to end the match.
