ATHENS, Ohio – Kent State was unable to maintain a two-run lead and lost, 3-2, in a Mid-American Conference softball game at Ohio on Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (9-24, 4-7 MAC) recorded a pair of two-out hits to get on the board in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Savannah Wing roped a single through the left side and then scored on a double by freshman Bekah Zachrich, who went 3-for-3 at the plate in the contest.
Crafty baserunning by redshirt senior Alexandria Whitmore led to a 2-0 lead after three innings. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Whitmore stole her second base of the day and then advanced to third after dodging a tag attempt to escape a rundown situation. A sac fly by sophomore Delaney Robeson allowed Whitmore to score.
An error allowed Ohio to score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie it at 2-2. The Bobcats hit a pair of balls to the warning track in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 3-2.
Zachrich attempted to start a rally in the top of the seventh and led off the frame with her third hit of the day. After a double play cleared the bases, freshman Bri Despines and Whitmore reached on a walk and hit by pitch, respectively. A groundout to the shortstop followed to end the game.
Anilese Kelly (3-10) allowed just one earned run and had two strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Kent State and Ohio will conclude the three-game series on Wednesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
