KENT- The Kent State Golden Flashes head to Athens, Georgia for the 2023 NCAA Women's Golf Regionals, held at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
After Sunday's practice round, the Flashes will be the seven seed in the 12-team field for the 72-hole regional, held over three days.
The Golden Flashes were runaway winners of the Mid-American Conference Championship, besting second-place Northern Illinois by a whopping 33 strokes. The Flashes placed all five members of the team placed in the top-seven of the 50-player field led by individual champion Leon Takagi.
"The NCAA Championship is what we have been looking forward to since last August," Head Coach Casey Van Damme said. "The ladies are ready to compete and represent Kent State to the best of their abilities. The course is challenging and will test all parts of our games. Our key will be to control what we can control and to stay focused on our process to be successful."
With the conference championship title, the Golden Flashes earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and own a #42 ranking in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. They will compete in a regional that is headlined by top-seeded South Carolina, who is fourth in the latest rankings. The top-five teams and the low individual on a non-advancing team will move on to the national championship to be played May 19-24 at the Grayhawk Country Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. The full list of regional participants is listed below.
The twelve teams will tee it up at the University of Georgia Golf Course, a public course that will host a NCAA women's regional for the fourth time. The course plays as a par-71 and its championship layout was designed by Robert Trent Jones.
Kent State will field a team consisting of: Jennifer Gu, Mayka Hoogeboom, Noramol Nuchsila, Berta Sanchez, Hester Sicking, Leon Takagi. Teams will field a team of five each round with the top four scores counting towards the team score.
