KENT, Ohio – The Kent State women's soccer team celebrated Senior Day in style on Sunday, beating Duquesne 2-1 in a physical matchup at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
The Golden Flashes wrap up non-conference play with a 3-2-2 record, while the Dukes fall to 3-5-0 on the year.
Both teams played physical from the first whistle and never let up on the intensity. The Flashes held a slim 9-7 advantage in shots in the first half, but neither side could find the back of the net. Alisa Arthur led the Flashes' attack early, firing four shots on goal, but found the woodwork once and was turned away by a diving stop by the Dukes' keeper on another strong attempt.
The Flashes took command early in the second period, retaining possession in their attacking half until Siena Stambolich found the go-ahead goal in the 58th minute. Off of a throw in, Dalaney Ranallo found Callie Cunningham, who headed a pass over to the open Stambolich in the middle of the box. The junior fired a right-footer into the top-right to give the Flashes the 1-0 lead.
Stambolich is now tied for the team lead in goals (2) and points (5).
In the 75th minute, Amanda Winquist netted her first-career goal to double Kent State's lead. Cunningham dished the ball out to Stambolich, who nudged it over to the streaking Winquist for the score.
Cunningham now has a team-high three assists on the year.
Duquesne was able to find one goal late in the half, but the Flashes' defense prevailed to secure the victory.
The Flashes held the advantage in shots (19-12) shots on goal (8-6). Arthur led the Flashes' attack with six shots, while Sarah Melén tallied five saves in goal. The two squads were called for a combined 32 fouls in the back-and-forth game.
