KENT, Ohio – For the second game in a row, the Kent State women's soccer team won in dramatic fashion, scoring in the final seconds to secure a 2-1 win over Eastern Michigan on Thursday night at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
The Golden Flashes (6-2-2, 3-0 MAC) are off to their best start to Mid-American Conference play since 2017, while the Eagles (1-5-5, 1-1-1 MAC) drop their first game of the conference season after last week's unbeaten weekend.
Josie Morgan opened up the scoring for the Flashes in the 15th minute. Alisa Arthur sent a cross into the box that Morgan collected with her right foot and directed it to the right of the Eastern keeper.
Morgan is now tied with Arthur for the team lead in goals (3). Arthur leads the Flashes with nine points on the year, scoring three goals and adding three assists.
The Eagles were able to find the equalizer in the 35th minute and the teams went into the locker room in a 1-1 deadlock.
Neither side wanted to give an inch in the second half, and as the clock wore down, the level of intensity continued to increase. Each side was handed a pair of yellow cards in the second half.
In the 89th minute, Morgan sent another shot towards the goal that curled towards the left post but the Eagles' keeper knocked it out of play for a Kent State corner kick. Siena Stambolich took the corner and sent the ball arcing in front of the net. Abby Breitschuh was the first person to the ball, heading it into the back of the net with just 48 seconds left on the clock.
The goal marked Bretischuh's first in a Kent State uniform, while Stambolich is now tied with Morgan for the second-most points on the team (7).
The Flashes held the advantage in total shots (22-11) and shots on goal (7-6). Arthur, Morgan, and Alanna Raimondo paced the Flashes' attack with four shots apiece, while Sarah Melén posted five saves in the win.
