LAST TIME OUT
The Golden Flashes (6-2-2, 3-0-0 MAC) knocked off Eastern Michigan in thrilling fashion on Thursday at Dix Stadium.
Josie Morgan opened up the scoring for the Flashes in the 15th minute. Alisa Arthur sent a cross into the box that Morgan collected with her right foot and directed it to the right of the Eastern keeper. Just before the first half ended, Eastern got on the board off of a corner kick.
Neither side wanted to give an inch in the second half, and as the clock wore down, the level of intensity continued to increase. Each side was handed a pair of yellow cards in the second half.
In the 89th minute, Morgan sent another shot towards the goal that curled towards the left post but the Eagles' keeper knocked it out of play for a Kent State corner kick. Siena Stambolich took the corner and sent the ball arcing in front of the net. Abby Breitschuh was the first person to the ball, heading it into the back of the net with just 48 seconds left on the clock.
Thursday's game-winner was the first goal of Breitschuh's Kent State career.
CLEAN SWEEP
The Golden Flashes were the only squad in the Mid-American Conference to start conference play with a pair of wins. Alisa Arthur and Kelsey Salopek were instrumental in securing six points for Kent State and earned MAC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively. Arthur scored the game-winner in Thursday's game against Ohio, then netted the clutch equalizer against Akron on Sunday. Salopek played 81 minutes on the Flashes' back line as Kent State opened conference play with a shutout win over the Bobcats. She then scored the game-winner against the Zips in spectacular fashion, shooting from 30 yards out. This marks Arthur's first-ever MAC weekly award and Salopek's second. The sophomore earned Offensive Player of the Week honors after the first weekend of conference play a season ago.
Last month, Sarah Melén earned Defensive Player of the Week honors following a 10-save performance against Pitt and a shutout win on the road at Cleveland State.
SCOUTING MIAMI
The RedHawks (3-7-1, 0-3-0 MAC) have dropped four consecutive matches, including their first three to start MAC play. In those four games, Miami has been outscored 11-2.
Taylor Hamlett leads the offensive attack for Miami, scoring two goals and adding an assist so far this season. She is the only RedHawk to tally multiple goals. Makenna Morrison leads the club with 28 shots.
Dominique Popa has played and started in nine games in goal for Miami. She has made 32 saves so far this year and sports a 1.53 goals against average.
SERIES HISTORY
Kent State and Miami will face off for the 29th time on Sunday. The Golden Flashes trail slightly in the all-time series, 10-14-4, but are 4-2-1 in the last seven meetings with the RedHawks. The Flashes are fresh off of 2-1 win over Eastern Michigan on Thursday, while Miami is coming off of a 2-0 loss to Buffalo.
Last season, Siena Stambolich scored as the Flashes forced a 1-1 draw with Miami on Senior Day at Dix Stadium.
