KENT, Ohio – The Kent State men's golf team hosted a 36-hole individual event on Monday, the Golden Flash Individual, at the Country Club of Hudson. The tournament featured 28 golfers from nine schools, including four Flashes, giving athletes who have not featured prominently in team competitions the opportunity to compete.
In his first appearance of the season, Connor Malicki impressed by posting the lowest 36-hole score of the four Kent State golfers competing on Monday. The sophomore fought rainy elements throughout the morning to fire a 1-under-par 71 in round one before wrapping up his day with a 1-over-par 73 in round two. Concluding his day at even par, Malicki finished the tournament tied for second place.
Another impressive performance for the Flashes came from Ramiro Acevedo. The freshman has shown glimpses in his inaugural collegiate season, including claiming the individual championship in September's Minnesota Golf Classic. He continued the positive momentum on Monday with an opening round even-par 72 before concluding his day with a 1-over-par 73 to finish tied for fifth place.
Making just the second appearance of his collegiate career, Darcy Hogg finished tied for 11th at the Golden Flash Invitational. The freshman fell victim to the conditions in his opening round, posting a 4-over-par 76. Hogg was able to recover well in the afternoon, firing a 1-under-par 71 in round two to finish the event at 3-over-par.
The final Flash to make an appearance on Monday was Daniel Heister. Similar to Hogg, Heister struggled against the rainy conditions throughout the morning, recording a 7-over-par 79 in round one. The sophomore responded emphatically, firing a 2-under-par 70 in round two, the best round by a Kent State golfer at the event. Heister's strong second round enabled him to climb to a tie for 14th place in the final standings at 5-over-par.
The Flashes will conclude their Fall season on Monday, October 21 at the Flyer Invitational in Dayton. The tournament will be Kent State's final event until the Hal Williams Intercollegiate in February.
