KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Kent State Golden Flashes football team continues Mid-American Conference play this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on the road against the Western Michigan Broncos.
This will be the first meeting of the #KentGRIT era between Kent State and Western Michigan. Head Coach Kenni Burns, who was the running backs coach for the Broncos during the storybook 2016 season, will face his former team for the first time following former WMU head coach PJ Fleck to Minnesota for the same position.
Kent State is 20-36-1 all-time against Western Michigan. This will be the third consecutive meeting that has taken place inside of Waldo Stadium, and the first meeting between the schools since the MAC implemented its new pod scheduling system. Kent State last won in Kalamazoo, 32-14, on Sept. 12, 2013.
The Golden Flash offense has exploded since Tommy Ulatowski took over as QB1 to start MAC play, averaging 24.7 points and 362.3 yards per game in three contests against conference opponents. He set a new passing yards career-high in each of his first two starts, recording 345 against Eastern Michigan on Sept. 28 and then 394 against Ball State on Oct. 12. Ulatowski was responsible for four TDs in both games.
Wide receiver Chrishon McCray was the go-to target in those games, scoring five receiving TDs and totaling more than 400 yards while also setting a new career-high in both games. He earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after the Ball State game. The redshirt sophomore caught eight passes for a 213 yards and three scores against the Cardinals. This was the seventh best single game receiving performance in Flashes history.
Additionally, running back Ky Thomas is coming off his best game in a Kent State uniform following a 121-yard performance last week at Bowling Green.
Following this Saturday, Kent State will begin preparation for Midweek MACtion play. Next up for the Flashes will be Ohio at home on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
