Flashes Drop 10-9 Shootout in Athens

ATHENS- The Golden Flashes were on the wrong end of a 10-9 back-and-forth shootout against the Ohio Bobcats in Athens on Saturday afternoon.
The only inning that didn't have any runs scored was the first. Kent State got on the board first, with Mike McNamara and Jake Casey each hitting solo homers in the top of the second. Ohio answered in the bottom of the second off starter Eric Chalus as a bases-clearing double gave the Bobcats their first lead of the game.
Kyle Jackson demolished a solo homer in the third to re-tie the game, only to see a pair of run scoring singles give the Cats back the lead in the bottom of the inning. The Flashes took the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs. Tim Orr drew a bases-loaded walk and Dom Kibler added a sacrifice fly. Ohio again answered in the bottom of the inning, tying the game on a homer and taking back the lead in the seventh.
The bottom of the order came through in the eighth as Casey, Ripken Reese and Bo Shinkle all drove in runs as the Flashes rallied back to take a 9-8 lead. But Ohio would have the last laugh in the bottom of the ninth. A run-scoring double tied the game and put runners on second-and-third with one out. After an intentional walk, a ground ball to third looked to be a potential double play but it was not to be and the Bobcats walked it off, 10-9.
The loss puts Kent State at 8-10 on the season and 3-2 in MAC play. Ohio is 7-9 and also 3-2 in conference. The Flashes will look to take the finale on Sunday afternoon, first pitch is at one p.m.
