KENT- The Kent State Golden Flashes rank atop the Mid-American Conference in a five-year snapshot of the Learfield Director's Cup, a measure of department-wide success.
Over the last five years, the Golden Flashes have totaled 939 Director's Cup points, clearing the nearest conference rival by over 50 points. In the "Group of Five", that mark would also top Conference USA, place second in the Sun Belt and fourth in the American and Big East.
The Director's Cup awards points based on an institution's finish in the NCAA championships (except for FBS football).
"Our Play as One Strategic Plan emphasizes a vision to be recognized as a comprehensive athletics program that inspires communities and transforms lives," Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Randale L. Richmond said. "I couldn't be prouder of our student-athletes and team accomplishments as we continue to thrive under this model."
This department-wide effort has been led by the Men's and Women's Golf teams. The women's golf team has qualified in each of the past five championships, reaching the final in spring of 2021 and Leon Takagi qualified as an individual last spring. ย Track and Field has sent 15 student-athletes over the past five seasons to the indoor and outdoor championships combined and Baidy Ba qualified for the 2022 NCAA Championships in cross-country.
On the team level, Kent State football made a pair of bowl games including capturing the 2019 Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl, the first bowl victory in program history. Men's basketball took home the 2023 MAC tournament title, punching their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
