DeKALB, IL- Josh Johnson continued to swing a hot bat but a five-run third from NIU did in the Flashes in a 7-3 setback on Saturday.
Johnson had another three-hit outing on Saturday, going three-for-four and is now 7-for-9 in the series and hitting .470 against MAC pitching and .370 overall. The grad student got the scoring started in the second, firing a two-run single through the right side to make it a 2-0 game.
The Huskies plated five in the third inning, using four hits and four walks off of Joe Miceli to go up by three. The Flashes' offense couldn't get anything going until the seventh when they got two on but couldn't score and broke through again in the eighth. Kent State put together a two-out rally started by a Dom Kibler walk, with the freshman scoring on a Peyton Ebbing single. Kent State would get the tying run to the on-deck circle in the ninth, but NIU was able to close out the game and even up the series.
Kent State now sits at 18-18 overall and 9-8 in MAC play, NIU improves to 12-25 overall and is 7-10 in the MAC. The rubber match between the conference foes is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
