Kent, Ohio- The Kent State soccer team travels to Athens on Sunday for a Mid-American Conference matchup with Ohio. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Kent State soccer team fell to Miami in a physical 1-0 contest on Thursday Night
The Flashes' defense held the Miami offense in check for most of the first half, limiting the RedHawks to Just two shots in the first half. Offensively the Flashes generated multiple scoring chances but couldn't find the back of the net as Dominique Popa tallied 5 saves in the opening period.
Miami would break the scoreless tie in the 38th minute when an Emily Paul Cross found the head of Millie Cook at the back post who headed it into the net.
The Flashes continued to attempt to break down the RedHawks defense as the second half began. Kent State's best chance to find the equalizer came in the 77th minute when the Flashes got three back-to-back-to-back corners that culminated in a Thea Helen Oberhoff cross that found the head of Kelsey Salopek but was saved by a diving Popa.
Rising in the Record Book
Alisa Arthur is rising in many categories of the Kent State record book. The senior is now ninth in both goals (22) and points (58) and is knocking on the door of being in the top 10 in assists and shots on goal.
Offensive Efficiency
Kent State has averaged just under two and a half goals per game through the non-conference portion of the 2024 campaign, good for over double their goals per game (1.14) through the non-conference potion of their 2023 schedule. In front of goal the Flashes are converting on 32% of their shots on goal, nine percent higher than their 2023 non-conference campaign (24%).
Arthur has been the catalyst for the offense, netting five goals and one assist in 443 minutes this season. Fellow forwards Samantha Miller and Josie Morgan have both found the back of the net twice so far. Other goal scorers include Thea Helen Oberhoff, Alanna Raimondo, Addy Cusick, and Ava Todd. The Flashes look to find the net against a stout Toledo defense who has allowed seven goals in seven competitions this season.
Scouting Ohio
The Bobcats (6-1-3, 1-0-2 MAC) have started conference play with five points from their first three games.
The Bobcat offense is led by Jaimason Brooker who has 12 points in 10 competitions, the sophomore is the maestro in midfield leading Ohio with six assists. Scout Murray leads the Bobcats with four goals.
Celeste Sloma is the main woman in net for Ohio. The junior is averaging 0.53 goals per game and 3.4 saves per game.
Series History
Sunday will mark the 36th meeting all time between Kent State and Ohio with the Flashes holding a 17-15-3 edge in the series. The two teams split the pair of matchups from last season. The Flashes took the MAC season opener last year in Athens 1-0, while the Bobcats took the MAC tournament championship game 1-2.
