KENT, Ohio — Senior Bridget Dunn totaled 13 points and 15 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season to lead Kent State in a 66-57 setback against first-place Ball State on Wednesday evening at the M.A.C. Center.
Despite shooting just 30% from the floor and being minus-10 in the turnover battle, the Golden Flashes (10-7, 3-2 MAC) had an opportunity to tie it with less than six minutes remaining. The Cardinals got a key steal for a breakaway layup on that possession, however, and closed on a 13-7 run to remain unbeaten in Mid-American Conference action.
A pair of three-pointers by sophomore Mya Babbitt and a third from freshman Journey Hildebrand helped Kent State open the contest with an 11-4 lead. The Flashes missed their final four shots of the first quarter and committed a pair of turnovers during a late run that allowed the visitors to go ahead 16-12 after 10 minutes of action.
After trailing by as many as eight during the second period, Kent State tied it 31-31 on Babbitt's third triple of the night with 1:06 to play. A pair of free throws then gave the Cardinals a 33-31 halftime lead.
Following a 3-for-17 shooting performance during the third quarter, the Flashes trailed by 13 entering the final 10 minutes.
A three-pointer by Dunn and four-point conversion by senior Jenna Batsch trimmed the deficit to six with just under nine minutes on the clock. Following two foul shots by the Cardinals, Dunn stroked another three-pointer and sophomore Janae Tyler converted inside to make it a 53-50 game at the 6:13 mark. Kent State got another stop on defense, but a poor pass was then taken away by the visitors for their first field goal of the period to swing momentum back in their favor.
The Flashes will host Western Michigan for the annual We Back Pat game on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the M.A.C. Center. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
