KENT, Ohio – Senior Alexandre Malanda broke the Kent State men's triple jump record on Saturday as the team opened the indoor season hosting the Jud Logan Memorial at the Kent State Field House.
After posting a new personal-best on his fifth attempt of the day, Malanda soared 53'-5.75" on his final jump, breaking the previous record set by Donovan Tolbert in 2016. His mark sits No. 2 on the national performance list and will likely be good enough to earn a spot at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Golden Flashes also had standout performances in the women's horizontal jumps. Junior Keeli Dunaway won the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 41'-0.25" that is tied for the seventh best jump in school history. The long jump was won by junior Matilde Carboncini, whose personal-best of 19'-4.75" puts her in a tie for the No. 8 spot all-time. Carboncini had a busy day, placing second in the 60-meter hurdles (8.88), fourth in the 200-meter dash (25.69) and fourth in the 4x400m relay (4:04.73).
Sophomore Amryne Chilton led Kent State in running events, sprinting to victory in the women's 60-meter dash in a time of 7.51 seconds that is tied for the third fastest in school history. Chilton also ran the opening leg of the 4x400m relay team that included fifth-year Jericha Petrella, sophomore Ella Baker and fifth-year Alexandria Verbancic. The quartet recorded a time of 3:51.92.
Two additional Flashes won events while establishing new PRs. Sophomore Kyla Taress cleared 12'-3.50" in the women's pole vault and sophomore Jack Curtis was the first to cross the finish line in the men's 5,000-meters in 15:31.38. Kent State claimed the top three spots in the race, with Carter Almady (15:52.07) taking second and Nick Huger (15:55.04) in third.
Fifth-year Jaheim Jones won the men's 60-meter dash in 6.78 seconds. Sophomore Sean Callahan Jr. was the next runner across the finish line in 6.86 seconds.
Junior Karsyn Spears added a victory in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.57.
Redshirt sophomore Charles Pawlosky was the final winner for the Flashes with a throw of 55'-0.75" in the men's shot put. Redshirt junior Tony Lambert took second with a mark of 51'-11.25".
