KENT, Ohio – The Kent State field hockey team competed in its final home contest of the 2025 season on Sunday afternoon, narrowly falling 3-2 in overtime to James Madison. The Golden Flashes (4-10, 3-5) showed tremendous resolve to come back from a one-goal deficit twice in regulation, before the Dukes found a winner in the second period of overtime.
In what was an evenly contested game throughout, James Madison found the game's opening goal with six minutes remaining in the second quarter to take a 1-0 lead into the half. Seven minutes into the second half, the Flashes found a breakthrough on a creative penalty corner play as Maybritt Duwel deflected in a powerful ball from Roos ten Pas to level the score at 1-1. It marks Duwel's seventh goal of the season, putting the junior alone atop the team's season goal-scoring tally at seven goals. The assist from ten Pas marks the first point of her collegiate career, coming in the final home game of her freshman season.
After the Dukes took a 2-1 lead midway through the fourth quarter, Kent State once again pushed for an equalizer. With around three minutes remaining in regulation, the Flashes drew three consecutive penalty corners, finding the back of the cage on the third attempt. Delfina Larripa delivered a moment to remember on her senior day, as her shot deflected off a defender and found the top corner of the goal to equalize the tie at 2-2 with under three minutes remaining in regulation.
As the game moved into overtime, both teams exchanged dangerous attacks, but neither squad could land a fatal blow in the opening ten-minute overtime period. James Madison found the game-winning goal three minutes into the second overtime period as the Dukes were able to finish a ball played in from the right corner to take home a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win.
Goalkeeper Allison Wood marked her senior day with four saves, including two crucial stops to keep the Flashes alive in overtime. Mary Kate Finnan also added a defensive save for Kent State in the contest.
The Golden Flashes still have all to play for in terms of MAC Tournament qualification with one regular-season game remaining on the schedule. Kent State will head to North Carolina to face App State on Friday, October 31, at 3 p.m. in the team's regular-season finale.
