KENT, Ohio —Senior Tatiana Thomas recorded her first double-double on Wednesday as the Kent State women's basketball team fell to Miami, 67-63, inside of the M.A.C. Center.
Thomas led the Golden Flashes (5-8, 0-2 MAC) with 18 points and 11 rebounds, both new career-highs. She added a career-high four blocks and recorded three steals.
After trailing by eight midway through the first quarter, Kent State made five of its final seven shots to get within 19-18 after 10 minutes of action.
Freshman Caitlyn Holmes provided a boost off the bench in the second quarter with five quick points to help the Flashes go ahead 33-30 with 2:09 remaining in the half. Miami then scored eight in a row to make it 38-33 at halftime.
It was Kent State's time for a strong finish in the third period, as a deep three-pointer by redshirt junior Corynne Hauser right before the buzzer capped an 8-0 run that cut the deficit to one entering the fourth.
Hauser added a mid-range jump shot on the opening possession of the period and Thomas sank two free throws a little more than a minute later to make it 51-48, matching the Flashes' largest lead of the day. After falling behind by three, Hauser tied it with a triple and junior Mya Babbitt jumped a passing lane for a steal and layup to go ahead 56-54 with 6:02 remaining.
Kent State missed its next six shots until Hauser drained her third triple of the contest to get within 61-59 with 1:11 to play. The Flashes trimmed the deficit to two on two more occasions but were forced to foul both times, and the RedHawks sank their free throws.
The Flashes will be right back in action on Saturday, Jan. 3 to host MAC newcomer UMass. The second contest of a doubleheader at the M.A.C. Center, tip is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
