MUNCIE, Ind. — Sophomore Mya Babbitt shot 4-of-5 from behind the three-point line and set a new program standard for long range shooting on Saturday as Kent State beat first-place Ball State, 60-54, to snap the host's streak of 15 consecutive home wins against Mid-American Conference opponents.
Babbitt, who now has 72 three-pointers during her sophomore campaign, finished with 12 points and entered the fourth quarter one away from tying the Golden Flashes' single-season record. The sharpshooter tied the mark set by Melissa DeGrate 20 years ago, with a triple from the right wing that put Kent State ahead by 11 with 6:50 remaining. Babbitt splashed another from the right wing at the 2:34 mark to move ahead of DeGrate and make it a 56-47 game.
Ball State scored the next five before senior Jenna Batsch returned momentum to the Flashes with a pullup jump shot in transition. The Cardinals sank a pair of free throws to get back within four, but junior Dionna Gray calmly made two free throws in the final minute to put the game away. Batsch finished with a game-high 18 points and sits at 999 for her career.
Kent State (17-10, 9-5 MAC) controlled play near the basket with a 30-18 paint scoring advantage and 42-29 rebounding advantage. Senior Bridget Dunn grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and had two rejections, while sophomore Janae Tyler provided a career-high 11 boards to go with nine points. Junior Tatiana Thomas contributed six points, five rebounds and career-high three steals.
The Flashes will return to the M.A.C. Center to host Northern Illinois on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.
