CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Delaney Robeson surpassed 100 career hits on Saturday as Kent State split its two games at the Mizuno Showdown.
The Golden Flashes (4-13) rallied late to beat Saint Joseph's, 8-7, in the first game of the day and then fell to host North Carolina, 12-5.
In addition to the career milestone, Robeson had a big day at the plate, going 5-for-8 with a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored. She has multiple hits and two runs scored in all three games so far this weekend.
Game 1: Kent State 8, Saint Joseph's 7
The Golden Flashes took advantage of a pair of errors to score in the opening frame. Brynn Libler singled and moved to second on an error. Another error placed runners on the corners, and Libler scored on a double-steal.
Saint Joseph's scored twice in each of its first two trips to the plate to lead 4-1.
Timely hits with two outs in the third and fifth innings allowed Kent State to tie it at 5-5. A pair of singles and walks plate one run in the third. In the fifth, a hit batter and walk extended the frame. Megan Claerhout then drove in a run with a single and Kam Utendorf cleared the bases with a double.
After the Hawks went back ahead 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth, the Flashes scored three in the top of the sixth. Libler started the rally with a leadoff triple. A walk drawn by Delaney Robeson placed runners on the corners, and an error allowed Libler to tie it and put two in scoring position. Savannah Wing brought in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice and Aaralyn Nogay recorded a RBI on a sac fly to center.
Saint Joseph's got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Kent State remained ahead as Robeson threw out the tying run at the plate to end the inning.
Both teams left a pair on base in the seventh, as the Flashes held on for the win.
Leilani Johnson, Libler, Robeson and Utendorf each had two hits.
Abbey Pochie (1-4) earned the victory and did not allow an earned run over the final 2.2 innings. Carley Penner provided 3.1 innings in her season debut inside of the circle and allowed two runs on three hits.
Game 2: North Carolina 12, Kent State 5
The Tar Heels opened a 6-0 lead with four runs in the first and two in the third.
Kent State scored all of its runs with two outs, beginning with a pair in the top of the fourth. Delaney Robeson extended the frame with a single and scored on a double by Katie Jo Moery. Savannah Wing followed with a single and Aaralyn Nogay brought Moery home with a single back up the middle.
North Carolina made it 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth on its second of three home runs in the game.
Robeson's three-run blast over the left field fence brought the Golden Flashes within 8-5 in the top of the fifth.
The Heels answered with a three-run shot in the bottom of the inning and added another run in the sixth.
Two-out hits by Robeson and Moery loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout thwarted a comeback effort.
