MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Kent State men's golf team continued their second tournament of the Spring on Monday as the General Hackler Championship commenced with round two at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club. The Flashes fought through inclement weather conditions and delays to post a 6-over-par 294 in the second round to sit tied for ninth among the 16 teams competing entering Tuesday's final round.
Auburn holds a strong lead over the field through 36 holes at 14-under-par. Duke (-5), Louisville (-5), and Baylor (-2) represent the other three teams under par heading into round three.
Kent State was led by a strong second round from Nolan Haynes on Monday. The Freshman fired the low score of the day for the Flashes with a 2-under-par 70 in a round that featured five birdies. Haynes' big moving day improves his overall score to even par as he sits tied for 21st place among the 90 players competing through 36 holes.
Bryce Reed fired the Flashes' second-best round of the day with a 2-over-par 74, highlighted by an up-and-down front nine which included three birdies and four bogeys. Reed's second round was an improvement on a 4-over-par 76 in round one to bring his 36-hole total to 6-over-par, putting him in a tie for 59th ahead of tomorrow's final round.
The Flashes' final two scores countable toward the team total on Monday were recorded by Jordan Gilkison and Ramiro Acevedo, who each posted a 3-over-par 75 in round two. For Acevedo, it was an improvement on a 5-over-par 78 yesterday, pitting him at 8-over-par and tied for 67th through two rounds. On the contrary, Gilkison's 75 matches his highest score of the 2024-2025 season, showcasing great consistency throughout his senior year. After an even-par 72 in round one, Gilkison is tied for 37th at 3-over-par through two rounds of play.
Edvin Backstrom was the third Kent State golfer to post a 3-over-par 73 on Monday, although he is competing as an individual this week. The senior sits in the top 50, tied for 45th at 4-over-par ahead of Tuesday's final round.
Despite a 5-over-par 77 in round two, freshman Isaiah Ibit still sits in the top 30 as he is tied for 29th. After bogey troubles throughout the day, Ibit closed his round in strong fashion with an eagle on hole no. 15, followed by three consecutive pars.
The Flashes will look to climb the leaderboard tomorrow, March 18, with the third and final round of the General Hackler Championship set to begin at 8:10 a.m.
