KENT- The Kent State Golden Flashes baseball team split the Sunday doubleheader against Northern Illinois Huskies. The Flashes dropped game one by a score of 8-14 but responded in the series finale 10-9.
Kent State would take two out of three from Northern Illinois to clinch their first series win of the Mid-American Conference season.
Game One
Northern Illinois would strike first on Sunday scoring one in the first, two of the second, and one more in the third. Kent State responded with a 2-RBI single in the fourth off the bat of Hunter Klotz. The Flashes would then tie the game up in the fifth thanks to an RBI single by Brody Williams and a sacrifice fly by Sawyer Solitaria.
Benny Roebuck was stellar out of the bullpen in an unlucky loss. The senior went 3.2 innings allowing just one run on one hit while striking out four Huskies.
Northern Illinois would go on to score five in the eighth and four in the ninth to jump out to a 14-4 lead.
Kent State would attempt to mount a comeback in the ninth scoring four runs. Williams plated the first run in the inning thanks to a RBI fielder's choice, Solitaria continued the rally with a RBI single to second base, Williams would come in to score on a wild pitch, and Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe singled to shortstop. But the Flashes comeback would come up short.
Redshirt-Freshman Landon Tiesing made his first collegiate start in the opener.
Game Two
Northern Illinois would jump out to another first inning lead in game two scoring two in the top half of the inning.
Kent State would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the second thanks to a RBI single by Alejandro Covas, a SAC fly by Kolton Schaller, and a ball hit by Matt Thompson that snuck under the glove of the Huskies' shortstop.
The Huskies would tie the game at three in the top of the third before Williams gave the Flashes the lead again in the bottom half with an RBI double up the right field line.
The teams would continue to exchange blows with the huskies scoring 2 in the fifth and three in the sixth. Solitaria served an RBI double to right-centerfield and Thompson scored on a throwing error by the Huskies to keep Kent State within striking distance.
The flashes took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Jake Casey got his pitch in the bottom of the sixth and did not miss it. The senior hit a grand slam to the deepest part of Schoonover Stadium to give the Flashes a 10-8 lead.
Northern Illinois threatened in the top of the ninth but Peyton Cariaco slammed the door closed for his fifth save of the season.
