MUNCIE, Ind. – The Kent State women's golf team improved its advantage atop the team leaderboard to 22 strokes during the second round of the MAC Championship at Delaware Country Club on Monday. All five golfers in the Flashes' lineup are in the top seven of the 50-golfer field, with freshman Gracie Larsen tied for the lead at even par and a trio of freshmen in the top three.
The Flashes made huge strides toward a 26th consecutive conference crown with an 8-over-par 296 in round two, the lowest round of the day by eight strokes. Kent State holds a 22-stroke lead over Northern Illinois, which is in second at 31-over-par through 36 holes.
The team was spurred by a huge day from Gracie Larsen, who is one of just two players at even-par after round two. She posted an even-par 72 behind a strong start of three birdies in her opening five holes to climb to a tie for first. The Australian native now has eight rounds of par or better this season after opening the MAC Championship with back-to-back 72s.
Aryn Matthews finished in style on Monday to climb up to third on the leaderboard. The Canadian freshman posted a birdie on hole no. 17 and an eagle on hole no. 18 to end the day with a 2-over-par 74. She sits just three strokes back of the lead at 3-over-par ahead of tomorrow's final round.
Isabella Goyette is the third Kent State freshman in the top three. She sits tied alongside Matthews at 3-over-par after tallying three birdies on Monday, including her first and final holes, to post a 2-over-par 74 in round two. Goyette is seeking her best finish of the season in Tuesday's third round, a mark which she set at tied for 15th back in September.
Veronika Kedronova overcame early bogey troubles on Monday to post the Flashes' final score countable toward the team total. After shooting 3-over-par in her opening two holes, the phenomenal sophomore shot just 1-over-par the rest of the round, thanks to two birdies to finish the day with a 4-over-par 76. Kedronova is tied for 7th at 5-over-par entering Tuesday's final round.
Despite posting a 6-over-par 78 on Monday, reigning MAC Championship medalist Leon Takagi is tied for 7th at 5-over-par, alongside Kedronova, entering round three. She fired a joint team-high three birdies on an up-and-down day two of the tournament. Takagi is just five strokes back of the leaders as she looks to climb the leaderboard and challenge for a second consecutive individual MAC Championship in round three on Tuesday.
The MAC Championship concludes tomorrow, April 22, with round three tee times set to begin at 9:30 a.m. for Kent State.
