KENT, Ohio – After coming back from a four-run deficit to send the game to extra innings, Kent State lost the series finale to visiting Ball State, 12-6, at Devine Diamond on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes' bats stayed hot and totaled 10 hits, including a season-high seven extra-base hits. Sophomore Leilani Johnson homered for the second game in a row and had a double, sophomore Ellie Facher hit her first collegiate triple and four additional batters had doubles.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning, with Kent State's coming on a RBI groundout by sophomore Megan Claerhout.
Ball State added two runs in both the third and fourth to go ahead 5-1.
The Flashes rallied with two outs in the bottom of the fourth with three consecutive extra-base hits. Facher got it started with a triple and scored on a double by senior Katie Jo Moery. Johnson followed with a homer to left field.
Kent State left a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, and the Cardinals plated a run in the top of the sixth to make it 6-4.
The Flashes got that run back in the bottom of the sixth on a sac fly by junior Carley Penner.
Down to the final out in the bottom of the seventh, senior Delaney Robeson doubled to left field and scored the tying run on a single by sophomore Aaralyn Nogay. Kent State was unable to bring in the winning run and headed to extra innings for the first time since opening day.
Ball State's offense exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth, and the Flashes were unable to match it in the bottom half of the inning.
Kent State will return to action next weekend with a three-game series at Central Michigan.
