MOUNT PLEASANT- The Kent State Golden Flashes baseball team completed the series sweep over the Central Michigan Chippewas on Sunday by a score of 9-4.
The Flashes have now swept back-to-back series in the Mid-American Conference and are riding an eleven-game winning streak.
Central Michigan would score the first three runs of the game with two in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second. But after giving up the three runs Kent State starter, Eric Chalus, would settle in nicely and give the Flashes five solid innings. The senior allowed the three runs only two of which were earned on four hits while striking out two Chippewas.
Kent State would explode for five runs in the top of the fourth inning and never look back. Jake Casey would open the inning with a lead off homer over the wall in right center field. Matthews would follow that up with an RBI ground out to score Sawyer Solitaria. Then with two outs in the innings the Flashes would score three more runs thanks to a Ripken Reese RBI double and back-to-back RBI single from Alejandro Covas and Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe.
The Flashes would get one more in the top of the sixth on a RBI triple by Covas to extend the Flashes lead to 6-3.
Central Michigan would threaten with a bases loaded one out situation in the bottom of the sixth, but Kent State would get a 4-6-3 double play to put up another zero on the scoreboard.
The two teams would exchange one run blows in the seventh with Kent State getting a Matthews RBI single in the top half and Central Michigan getting an RBI double in the bottom half.
The Flashes would add two runs of insurance in the top of the ninth thanks to an RBI single by Brody Williams and another RBI single by Matthews.
Rocco Bernadina was phenomenal again in relief for the Flashes. The senior went the final four innings allowing just the one run on three hits. The save marks the first of Bernadina's Kent State career.
On Deck for the Flashes
Kent State will take the quick road trip down to Columbus on Apr. 9 for a midweek matchup with the Ohio State Buckeyes. First pitch is currently set for 6 p.m.
