KENT- The Kent State Golden Flashes baseball team secured a series win over the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday with a 16-4 run rule victory. The run rule is the Flashes' seventh in Mid-American Conference play.
Kent State got the bats going early and often in the top of the first batting around and scoring eight runs. Luke Matthews would score the first run of the game after staling third and then coming over after an error by the catcher. Jake Casey would double the lead on an RBI single through the right side. Sawyer Solitaira would continue the hit parade sending an RBI double over the head of the Broncos centerfielder. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe would bring in two more on an RBI single. Matthews would cap off the inning with a two-run triple and then come in to score on a wild pitch just a few pitches later.
Hayden Jatczak would extend the Flashes' lead out to double digits with a two-run opposite field home run in the bottom of the third.
Western Michigan would cut back into the Kent State lead with two runs in the top of the fourth.
Kent state would blow the game open with six more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Landon Tiesing would start the inning with an RBI single out to left. Four more runs would come in on a pair of two-run singles courtesy of Jatczak and Solitaira. Casey would score the last run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The Broncos would get two more runs in the top of the fifth, but it would not be enough to stop the run rule from coming into effect.
Gavin Jones got the start on the mound for the Flashes and got his sixth win of the season going four innings allowing four runs on four hits. Rocco Bernadina would be the first arm out of the Kent State bullpen and the right-hander pitched two shutout innings allowing just one hit. Jordan Kolenda would pitch a clean seventh inning to close the door on the Broncos
