KENT, Ohio – As Kent State prepares for the upcoming season, wide receivers coach Kerry Dixon has one clear message for his unit: nothing is set in stone, and competition will determine who sees the field.
Building on Experience
While the Golden Flashes lost key contributors from last season, Dixon is confident in the veteran leadership returning to the program. "You got guys like Wayne Harris, Da'Shawn Martin, Jay Jay Etheridge... Dash Dorsey was here last year. You got Ardell Banks," Dixon noted. "So you have some experience in the room, a lot of guys that are looking to step up and take the place of those guys who left."
The group has shown promise through the early stages of camp, with Dixon emphasizing that while they've "been making a lot of plays out there running fast," the focus remains on cleaning up fundamentals and attention to detail.
Wayne Harris Emerges as Clear Leader
If there's one constant in the receiver room, it's the leadership of Wayne Harris. Dixon was emphatic in praising the redshirt freshman from Charleston, West Virginia.
"100% Wayne Harris, 100%," Dixon said when asked about leadership. "He's the leader in the room. He has the right mindset and the right makeup. He's one of the greater, better leaders I've ever been around, and I've been around a lot of really good ones."
Harris isn't just leading with words—he's backing it up on the field. "Wayne Harris is standing out," Dixon said, noting that Harris can play all positions and has become a leader for the receivers and the entire offense.
No Guarantees, Pure Competition
The most intriguing aspect of Dixon's approach is his commitment to keeping every spot competitive. "Nothing is set in stone at this point," he emphasized. "We're just going out there to compete to be the best unit we can be... Competition breeds success."
This philosophy extends throughout the depth chart, where multiple players are battling for positions. While Harris appears to be emerging as a top target, the race for the other key roles remains wide open. Da'Shawn Martin, despite being "hobbled a little bit," continues to battle through and showcase his football IQ. Jay Jay Etheridge, a contributor from last season, brings valuable experience and offensive understanding to the mix.
Newcomers Making Their Mark
Several newcomers have caught Dixon's attention during camp. Sebastian Brown and Teaunn Hunter have been standouts among the new faces. "Sebastian Brown is out there looking really good. Teaunn Hunter is looking really good. Those guys have made a few plays out there at practice," Dixon observed.
The coach also highlighted the potential in younger players like Maurice Stephens and Da'Realyst Clark, emphasizing that while they have talent, consistency will be key to earning significant playing time.
Versatility is Key
Dixon's system emphasizes positional flexibility, with players expected to master multiple spots across the formation. "I always like to think of the receiver room is like a basketball team," he explained. "Being able to put guys in positions to be successful... regardless of position, whether it be slot or outside guy, just putting them in a spot to where they can get open, make plays on the ball."
This versatility will be crucial as the coaching staff develops chemistry between an essentially new receiving corps and the quarterback position. Dixon acknowledged that building this connection is a process that requires repetition and consistency from both sides.
Measuring Success
For Dixon, a successful camp comes down to execution in critical situations. "I would like for those guys to finish camp being productive... scoring touchdowns when we get the opportunity to score touchdowns, but at the same time, having multiple guys that can play multiple positions."
The emphasis on situational football—gold zone efficiency, third-down conversions, and explosive plays—will determine which players emerge from camp ready to contribute immediately.
The Bottom Line
As Kent State's wide receivers continue through fall camp, the message is clear: opportunity awaits those who can consistently execute and prove themselves worthy of trust. With Wayne Harris setting the leadership tone and a competitive environment pushing everyone to elevate their game, this receiver corps appears positioned to exceed expectations despite losing key contributors from the previous season.
The true test will come when the lights turn on and game situations demand the fundamentals and attention to detail that Dixon has emphasized throughout camp.
