IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Kent State field hockey team hit the road on Friday to play its second consecutive ranked Big Ten opponent, falling 3-1 at No. 15 Iowa. The Golden Flashes (1-2) improved defensively from their previous outing at No. 13 Ohio State, but were unable to outscore the Hawkeyes despite recording nine saves.
The game opened with a defensive first quarter on both sides of the field, as the teams combined for just three shots and no goals in the opening 15 minutes. The Hawkeyes were able to break the seal early in the second quarter behind the stick of Dionne van Aalsum. Iowa's leading scorer found the back of the cage twice in quick succession to give the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead at the half.
Kent State found the team's lone goal of the afternoon early in the third quarter to cut the deficit in half. Emma Rolston beat the Hawkeye's goalkeeper for her team-high fourth goal of the season to make the contest 2-1 just over four minutes into the second half. As the third quarter wore on, Iowa was able to re-establish a two-goal lead as van Aalsum completed her hat trick with 70 seconds remaining in the period. Iowa's leading scorer found the back of the cage yet again with an insurance goal late in the fourth quarter to secure a 4-1 victory over the Flashes.
In the cage, Allison Wood and Floortje van Eijden split halves for Kent State, combining for eight saves, while defender Mary Kate Finnan added a defensive save to bring the team total to nine.
The Golden Flashes will return to action on Friday, September 12, at 6:00 p.m. as the team heads to Newark, Delaware, to take on the Delaware Blue Hens.
