ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Kent State women's golf team holds a two-stroke lead at the Wolverine Invitational following a strong opening two rounds at U-M Golf Course on Sunday. The Golden Flashes opened their second tournament of the Fall with an 8-over-par 292 in round one, before heating up with a 2-under-par 282 in the day's second round.
Following the team's first round of the season under par, Kent State is at 6-over-par through 36 holes, two strokes ahead of second-placed Iowa State and seven strokes ahead of third-placed Virginia. The Flashes' score of 2-under-par in round two was the best round recorded by any of the 15 teams competing in the Wolverine Invitational on Sunday.
The biggest story of the day for Kent State was the phenomenal play of Aryn Matthews. The sophomore from Ontario carded the team's low score in each of the two rounds contested on Sunday. Matthews opened her day with an even-par 71 in round one, before catching fire in round two with a 4-under-par 67, the best round of her collegiate career thus far and first collegiate round in the 60s. She tallied nine birdies across two rounds to climb up to second place among the 81 individual golfers competing. Matthews trails the individual leader by two strokes ahead of Monday's final round, seeking the first win of her collegiate career.
Leon Takagi continued a hot start to her senior season on Sunday, leading the team with ten birdies through 36 holes. The Tokyo native shot a 2-over-par 73 in round one, before firing a 3-under-par 68 in Sunday's second round to claim a spot in the top five with Matthews. Takagi's second-round 68 marks her first round in the 60s since her sophomore season in 2023-24, a year she won MAC Golfer of the Year and was an individual medalist at the MAC Championship. Tied for fourth place at 1-under-par with 18 holes remaining on Monday, Takagi is seeking her second consecutive top-five finish to open the season.
After some early struggles in round one, where she posted a 7-over-par 78, Isabella Goyette fired an even-par 71 in round two on Sunday. The sophomore is tied for 27th place at 7-over-par. Another Flash tied for 27th through two rounds is Veronika Kedronova, who started her day with a 2-over-par 73 before shooting a 5-over-par 76 in round two to also sit at 7-over-par.
Petra Babicova earned Kent State's final score countable toward the team total in both rounds one and two. The sophomore started her day with a 4-over-par 75, before matching Kedronova's 5-over-par 76 in round two. At 9-over-par, Babicova is tied for 36th ahead of round three.
The final round of the Wolverine Invitational is set for an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start on Monday morning as Kent State looks to defend the top spot and claim the team championship.
