MT. PLEASANT, Mich. — Junior Mya Babbitt had a game-high 24 points as Kent State fell to host Central Michigan, 66-57, inside of McGuirk Arena on Wednesday.
A tough shooting start and turnover issues had the Golden Flashes (5-10, 0-4 MAC) down 15 in the opening minute of the second quarter. A three-pointer by sophomore Emory Klatt and consecutive baskets by senior Tatiana Thomas cut the deficit to single digits and sparked a 19-6 run to close the second period. Babbitt's second triple of the day brought Kent State within 25-23 with 1:12 remaining. Despite two more defensive stops, the Flashes were unable to tie it and trailed by two at halftime.
Central Michigan made five of its first seven shots after the break to go back ahead by 10. Kent State refocused on defense held the Chippewas to 3-of-13 shooting over the final six minute of the third quarter while aggressively attacking the basket and knocking down seven of eight free throws to trail by six, 44-38, at the end of the period.
After falling behind by 13 midway through the fourth, Babbitt fueled one final run to give the Flashes a chance. The junior scored seven points and made three steals as part of a 9-0 run that got the Flashes back within four points with 2:31 to play. Central Michigan made its next three field goals and did not have another turnover the rest of the game, however, to secure the victory.
In addition to her scoring performance, Babbitt had a career-high five steals and one blocked shot to contribute on the defensive end. Senior Dionna Gray and Klatt also set new career-highs with four steals each. Klatt added seven points and a team-high seven boards.
The Flashes will return to the road this weekend and battle Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 10.
