KENT, Ohio – Kent State Field Hockey takes on Longwood and Appalachian State for a pair of important Mid-American Conference games this weekend.
The Golden Flashes face the Lancers on Friday at 3pm on the road in Farmville, Va. Then, on Sunday at noon, the team takes on the Mountaineers at home at Murphy-Mellis Field. The first 100 fans at Sunday's home game will get a free "Everyone Watches Kent State Women's Sports" t-shirt.
Sunday's game against App State could potentially break a tie for the final MAC standings as both teams are tied with a 2-3 record as of Thursday, Oct. 13.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes split the weekend series with Ball State and Penn State, defeating the Cardinals 4-1 in the MAC matchup on Friday and falling 0-3 to the Nittany Lions on Sunday.
The MAC win over Ball State was the statistically-best offensive game by Kent State this season as the team scored a season-high four goals. Eva Usoz, Emily Robertson, Marissa Skinner and Maybritt Duwel each had a goal in the game. Robertson got the Golden Flashes on the board in the win with her first collegiate career goal.
Despite falling to Penn State, the game was a quality loss with some of the highest-energy play defensively all year for the Golden Flashes. Ryli Zee had four defensive saves in the game, which is a Kent State Field Hockey single game program record.
Longwood Scouting Report
The Lancers are winless this season and have been shutout offensively in six out of their 11 games played. The closest conference games they've had were 1-3 losses to Bellarmine and Ball State. Hailey Flick scored a goal against Ball State and had an assist against Bellarmine, tallying the Lancers three points which is second-most on the team. Channy Johnson has five points, including a team-high three assists this season. Sophie Mooldijk has a conference-leading 151 saves this season.
App State Scouting Report
The Mountaineers are 6-7 on the season with a 2-3 record in the MAC and have been consistently competitive in both conference and non-conference games this season. The team has had to play four ranked opponents this year in one of the toughest schedules in the country. App State will take on Central Michigan on Friday before coming to Kent to face the Golden Flashes.
Chloe Hook has been the offensive leader for the Mountaineers, scoring six goals on just 13 shots. Brynn Shaffer, Sarah Callery, and Baylie Phillips also have multiple goals this year. Sophia Baxter has also been productive with a team-leading fix assists and 27 shots.
Series History
Kent State is 12-4 all-time against Longwood and 9-4 against App State. The most previous game against Longwood was a 2-3 overtime loss last year, but the team had won five of the previous six matchups with the Lancers dating back to 2021. Despite being 9-4 against the Mountaineers, the Golden Flashes have had a rough stretch as of late against App State, losing four out of their last five matchups.
