KENT, Ohio – Kent State improved to 4-1 in five-setters on Friday evening by beating Bowling Green, 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 13-25, 15-12) at the M.A.C. Center.
After dropping a back-and-forth opening set that required extra points (26-24), the Golden Flashes (7-8, 1-3 MAC) led wire-to-wire in the second to even the match at 1-1. Kent State built a 9-3 lead to cause the Falcons to call an early timeout. The visitors rallied to within a point at 11-10 before a kill by junior Vanessa Imoh ended the run with a kill as the Flashes pushed the lead back to six. BG got within a point again at 20-19 before a service error switched momentum back to Kent State. Redshirt junior Adalynn Ginley followed with a kill to extend the advantage to three, and the Flashes prevented the Falcons from scoring consecutive points to take it 25-22.
Imoh and sophomore Macie Moreland combined for eight kills and a .421 hitting percentage to lead Kent State to a 25-19 victory in the third set.
Following six ties and three lead changes early in the fourth, the Falcons used a 14-3 run to even it at 2-2.
Moreland recorded back-to-back kills to open the fifth and the Flashes held an early 5-1 lead. BG battled back to lead 11-10, but an attack error provided the fourth tie of the set. Ginley and Imoh then combined on a block, and Moreland added two more kills for a 14-11 advantage. The Falcons got a kill to extend the contest before Moreland posted her sixth kill of the set for match point. The outside hitter finished with a team-high 15 kills to tie her career-high.
Imoh had a season-best 12 kills, while junior Nadia Miller and senior Mercedez Brown added 10 each. Brown tallied a career-high 22 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Senior Christina Vigil also had a double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs. Juniors Lesley Furuta and Hailey Brenner added 15 digs each.
Kent State totaled a season-high 13 blocks. Ginley led the way with seven, while Imoh and Miller had five each.
The Flashes will travel to Toledo for a pair of matches next week on Oct. 8-9.
