Flashes Volleyball Tests First-Place Rockets in Weekend Opener
10/8/2026 8:44:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
TOLEDO, Ohio – Kent State gave first-place Toledo a scare on Thursday evening as the host Rockets needed a pair of successful coach challenges to prevent a fifth set and won 3-1 inside of Savage Arena.
The Golden Flashes (7-9, 1-4 MAC) struggled in the first two sets but extended the match with strong performances from sophomore Macie Moreland and junior Vanessa Imoh during the third set. Imoh's fourth kill of the set gave Kent State its largest lead at 19-13. Imoh then teamed with redshirt junior Adalynn Ginley for a block to end Toledo's three-point run and make it 20-16. Moreland took over from there with kills for each of the Flashes' next four points. Junior Avrey Rigney closed the set with a strong swing off the block.
Kent State led by as many as five points early in the fourth set, but the Rockets fought back to go ahead 15-14. Following a bad set that tied the score, Moreland contributed to a 4-0 run with a block assist and three kills. Toledo tied it again at 22-22, and after a timeout, Ginley was active at the net and put down a ball that ricocheted off the block. The Rockets answered with a kill for the sixth tie of the set and then won the next two points by winning coach challenges to end the match.
Moreland led all attackers with 15 kills, matching her previous career-high for the second straight contest. Junior Nadia Miller joined her in double-digits with 10 kills. Senior Christina Vigil totaled 37 assists. Junior Lesley Furuta tallied a match-best 20 digs and junior Maggie Kachmarik had a season-high 11.
The Flashes and Rockets will battle again on Friday at 6 p.m.
